Others appeared to have had little firsthand experience, but their literary skill brought out the significance of the plants. This collection contains familiar pieces and obscure ones. Gathering these selections was much like tending a small garden when one has a vast amount of seed and plants with which to fill the limited space. What to sow and what to toss? " Unfortunately, this collection contains only a limited sampling from works outside the Western tradition. A great deal of my work for this book involved deciphering colorful plant names from older texts, and I would have been completely uncertain of the terrain had I tried to interpret references in non-Western sources.
