In the big industrial cities of the North, immigrants from Europe—more than 10 million arrived between 1900 and 1910—caused controversy. Some people said the United States was letting in too many foreigners. But in the Southwest, in the early twentieth century, few people seemed to mind Mexicans crossing the border.
